Bridal & Special Occasion Make Up Application
Follow our simple techniques on how to apply a Bridal make up/ Special occasion application using Afterglow Organic Mineral Cosmetics and Vegan (Cruelty Free) Cosmetic Brushes.
Using the right tools and colours will help you to achieve a picture perfect finish in the comfort of your own dressing room.
FOUNDATION
The most important point to remember when applying mineral foundation is to allow your moisturiser to be fully absorbed before applying your foundation. This can easily cause your application to be uneven and patchy with an undesirable finish.
You can match your foundation to your skin colour by applying a tiny amount to the jaw line and in good natural light, if it blends in really well, then you know it’s a good match for your skin colouring.
Tap a penny size amount of foundation into the container lid, using our Professional Kabuki Brush swirl around in the container until the minerals are fully absorbed by the bristles, tap off the excess, starting from the outside edge of the face and working your way inward, sweep across the face in circular movements blending really well.
Re-apply and blend if needed until the desired coverage is achieved. Afterglow foundations allow for a buildable coverage without feeling heavy or cakey, but still maintaining a natural and lightweight coverage. This means that you can apply as many layers to suit your coverage.
Unlike traditional liquid foundations there are no tell tale signs at the jaw or hairline making it ideal.
CONCEALER
Afterglow foundations are multi-tasking so it can easily be used as your concealer, your foundation and SPF up to a factor 15.
Our Professional Concealer Brush is ideal for this application, the brush is so soft and flexible, allowing you to apply into all the little hard to reach corners, dip the concealer brush into the powder, tap off the excess and without swirling as with the foundation, apply to the areas of concern such as the eyes, especially the corners and around the nose area. Re-apply until desired coverage is achieved, remember, blending your powder is important for an even application.
SETTING POWDER
It is important to use a setting powder for any special occasion as you would want your make up to stay put for up to 10 hours or more.
For this application I have chosen to use our Translucent Setting Powder as it absorbs excess oiliness, reduces shine and pore size, and is great for anyone with hypersensitive skin as it contains a minimal amount of ingredients.
If you are particularly prone to oiliness, then it would be good to apply the setting powder before your foundation application as well as after following the same technique. This gives you the confidence that your make up will look good all day or night no matter what the occasion.
Using the same Professional Kabuki Brush as with your foundation, tap a small amount of powder into the container lid, swirl the brush around until the minerals are absorbed by the bristles, tap off the excess and apply to the entire face especially concentrating on the T-Zone where most of us are prone to shine and enlarged pores. Your T-Zone includes your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.
BRONZER
For any special occasion most women would prefer to have a beautiful tanned complexion so it is good to incorporate a bronzer into your application to even out the skin tone.
For this I have chosen to use the Medium Glow Bronzer, if you do have a very light complexion then opt for the Light Glow Bronzer. Using the same Kabuki Brush as I did with the foundation and setting powder although the Professional Blush Brush or Baby Kabuki Brush would be ideal for this application, tap a very tiny amount of bronzer into the container lid, swirl the brush until the minerals are absorbed by the bristles, tap off any excess and sweep across the forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, neck and décolleté, blending well. You can always go back and re-apply for more intense colour.
EYESHADOW
For the eyes, I have opted for some gorgeous colours to compliment any autumn/winter bride. A mix of 3 colours was selected to highlight, define and dramatize the eye area.
Using our Professional Round Eye Shadow Brush, apply the base colour (Snow) which is a gorgeous neutral shimmery colour to the entire eye area and don’t forget to apply to the corners of the eyes as well. This gives the eyes a wide open approach as if you had a full 8 – 10 hours sleep.
The shimmer in the minerals are not at all like glitter, but simply a natural shimmer within the minerals and will not show up in your photographs other than adding lightness and brightness to the eye area.
One important tip: never blow the excess from your brush as this can deliver a spray of saliva across the bristles causing patchy and uneven application. Remember, tap, tap, and tap.
Next I’m going to highlight and add lift to the brow bone. Working from the outside edge of the brow in towards the centre of the brow arch and using a light neutral colour (Bare), tap a tiny amount of powder into your lid, using the same round eye shadow brush, apply only along the lower brown line and blend. This little trick gives the illusion of a lifted and younger looking eye area.
Next I’m going to add a bit of drama and colour to the eyes, but not drama in the sense of dark sexy eyes, just soft subtle colour. To dramatize, I’ve opted for our gorgeous mineral eye shadow in (Venus).
I’m going to create a beautiful soft toned look to the eyes without being too bold. What I want to achieve is an even all round application without placing any emphasises on one part of the face being bolder than the other.
For this application, I’m going to use our Professional Vegan Crease Brush which is nice and flexible for blending, but still maintaining total control.
Tap only a very tiny amount of powder into the container lid, sweep the brush until the powder is absorbed, tap off the excess and apply starting from the outside corner of the eye working your way across the crease line and stopping midway. Apply to the lash line as well working your way across to midway and blend really well. This will look like a v-shape, with the point of v on the outer edge of the eyes.
Blend at the outer edge creating a more visible v-shape, but making sure that you don’t apply downwards on the eyes as this will look as if your eyes are drooping down making you look a little older.
It would be a good idea to keep handy an additional clean blending brush just in case you’ve over applied, you can easily use this brush to blend out.
Now apply to the bottom lash line, but creating a nice feathered look. If you prefer a more dramatic effect, then continue to apply until the desired finish is achieved.
EYELINER
For the eyeliner, I am going to use the same colour eye shadow (Venus) to define the eye shape.
Using our Professional Angled Eye Liner Brush, dip into some clean water, add a small amount of powder into the container lid and mix into a smooth liquid paste.
Using just the edge of the brush which is nicely shaped to create a really thin line, apply to the lash line and ending application where the lashes end. This creates a nice soft romantic look rather than applying to the entire eye which dramatises the finish. This will only make the eye area look heavy. Applying your liner to where the lashes end also gives the illusion of much fuller lashes
Do the same on the bottom lash line and don’t forget to stop where the lashes end.
MASCARA
Before applying mascara, curl the lashes as this will help to make them look thicker, fuller and more rounded, so investing in a good eye lash curler will certainly benefit your mascara application.
Apply two coats of mascara to the top lashes, but allow time for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat. Slightly lift the eye area and apply mascara from the base of the lash to the tip. You can apply as many coats of Afterglow Mascara as desired without your lashes looking clumpy and heavy.
If you do shed a tear on your special occasion, then you can easily tissue off Afterglow Mascara and re-apply without having to use an eye make up remover as you would with waterproof mascaras.
BLUSHER
It’s a good idea to do the blush application after your eye application, if you are touching your face to apply eye shadow or mascara, then at least your blush won’t rub off in the process.
For the cheeks I have opted for a natural shimmery pink that compliments the eye colours really well, but also adds a bit of warmth to the face.
Using the same application technique as the foundation, tap a very small amount of blush into the container lid, using our Professional Blush Brush, swirl around in the powder until the minerals are absorbed by the bristles, tap off the excess and sweep across the cheekbone, starting from the outside and working your way down the bone at an angle toward the nose area, don’t go too far in towards the nose though, just ending on the apples of the cheeks. You can almost feel your cheekbone, so use this as a guide.
Start off with a light application, re-apply if necessary. Less is more with Afterglow minerals although buildable coverage is easy to achieve.
LIPSTICK
Now for the lips, this is my favourite part. For the lips I have chosen to use a lipstick rather than a gloss.
The colour (Enchant) compliments all the other colours that I have used in this application and as Afterglow Organic Lip Love Lipsticks have amazing staying power without the need to constantly re-apply this makes it an ideal choice for your wedding day or special occasion.
Not only will the lipsticks keep your lips well moisturised throughout the day or night, but will naturally act as a barrier if it is a fairly cold day.
Using a lip brush, outline the shape of the lips, so adding the colour more intensely to the lip line, blotch with a tissue and re-apply again outlining the lip line. Now apply a full coverage, blotch the centre of the lips and re-apply.
This technique will ensure your lipstick lasts for a good few hours before re-application.
